Safety issues
Parking lot lighting and security
Illumination levels at entrances, exits, loading zones and collector lanes of parking areas should not be less than twice the illumination of the adjacent parking area or the adjoining street whichever is greater. Lighting poles should be mounted along the parking barriers and outside boundaries. Lighting requirements for CCTV are considerably lower than those required for direct visual observation depending on the type of system selected. CCTV cameras must be oriented so they are not blinded by the rising or setting sun, automobile headlights and reflections from parking lot luminaries. Check with your local municipality to learn the requirements for lighting in your area.

Restaurant reservation sites
A Cornell study on who uses them and how (must register to download)
study of 474 U.S. consumers documents the increasing popularity of sites that allow reservations at numerous restaurants—although the telephone remains by far the most common way to make a restaurant reservation. Slightly over half of the respondents to this survey had made a restaurant reservation online. About 60 percent of those who made reservations online used a multi-restaurant site to do so, and the rest used the restaurant’s own website.

The technology trends Wall Street is watching
This optimistic outlook is the result of heavy technology investments during the recession in an effort to protect margins and lower costs. And now, as the recovery continues to unfold, retailers are expected to utilize technology to drive sales, improve buying and allocation decisions, enhance margins, and leverage stronger top-line trends. So while retailers aren’t opening new stores, they are spending more on technology.

That’s Amari
The bitter pleasure of aperitifs
Every amaro is different, and there are hundreds. Many are local and artisanal, though there are large brands, like Ramazzotti and Fernet Branca. Amaro is traditionally made by infusing grape brandy with a (usually secret) mix of herbs, flowers, aromatic bark, citrus peel and spices—a blend that can include anything from cardamom to elderberry flowers. Then it's sweetened with sugar syrup and aged, sometimes for years. It's silky, like a liqueur; bitter and sweet in varying degrees; aromatically complex; and both delicious and fascinating.

McDonald’s misfire
Reflections on a Twitter promotion
McDonald's critics started piling on with negative stories, accusations of bad quality, and more than a few vegetarian warnings against meat altogether. Within two hours of the #McDStories tweet going up the company had pulled it down, replacing it with the original #meetthefarmers tweet. Wion says that the “conversation died down” by the end of the afternoon that day, although neither tweet seems to be faring well for the brand even now.

Many Alaska seafood species are now certified as sustainable
In order to provide credible verification of what Alaska has been doing for over fifty years, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) is now offering a choice in certification. This new independent, third-party certification of the management of the major Alaska commercial fisheries is directly based on the respected United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (Code) and the FAO Guidelines for the Ecolabelling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries (Guidelines) – both recognized around the globe as the best criteria for responsible fisheries management.

Recreating the past
Specifically, Shackleton’s favorite whiskey
In 1907, Ernest Shackleton and crew set out on the ship Nimrod to visit Antarctica and, they hoped, the South Pole. The good news was, the entire party survived the trip, thanks in part to the Rare Old Highland Whisky they brought to the frozen continent. But the expedition was forced to evacuate in 1909, some 100 miles short of the Pole they sought. And, as winter ice encroached and the men hurried home, they left behind three cases of the choice whisky. In 2007, just about a century later, the whisky was found, intact, at the expedition's hut at Cape Royds in Antarctica.

8 tips for starting an organic restaurant
When coming up with financial projections for an organic restaurant, assume your costs will be between 10 and 20 percent higher than a comparable restaurant, according to Sarma Melngailis, proprietor and co-founder of Pure Food & Wine, a renowned gourmet raw foods restaurant in New York City. And if you go whole hog and buy a high-quality water filtration system or compostable takeout packaging, your overhead can run even higher.

Investing
The Top 100 mutual funds
Some funds are still shining. Over the past year, for example, the managers at Wells Fargo Advantage Growth Investor fund have returned nearly 13 percent, thanks to some timely big bets on Apple and Whole Foods. Funds specializing in gold, commodities or other alternative investments also have had awfully good runs. During the past five years, in fact, dozens of funds have apparently made some rather intuitive market moves that have put their shareholders in the black. The challenge for investors, of course, is to find the managers who are most likely to do the same going forward -- a challenge that led SmartMoney to their annual best-funds list, divided into four categories.
