50 Great Ideas

Plug in and eat up

A request to “charge it” definitely has a different meaning at Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar, a 15-month-old, farm-to-table restaurant in Plano, Texas. “This restaurant is all about recycling, repurposing, local sourcing and other socially responsible practices,” says Randy DeWitt, CEO of parent company Front Burner Restaurants. “But selfishly, I have a Chevy Volt and the restaurant is right on my commuter path, so we decided to put in electric vehicle charging stations.” The free-use stations, installed under a government-funded green initiative, have proven to be so popular—and such a great source of local press—that the company has also put them in many of its 22 other restaurants where the landlord will permit them, including at concepts Twin Peaks and the Ranch at Las Colinas.
