I’ll be calling you
Richard Osborn and Larry Lee, multi-unit franchisees of McAlister’s Deli in southwest Texas and New Mexico, understand that their customers want fresh takeout food fast. So the duo designed a prototype restaurant that features a call-ahead, drive-up window for guests. After presenting the mockup to corporate, a brick-and-mortar prototype was built. Almost immediately, Osborn and Lee knew they were onto something.
Today, the call-ahead window is responsible for about 15 percent of sales at their store on Wadley Drive in Midland, Texas. That’s about double the amount of revenue generated from carryout orders at their other seven locations that don’t have call-ahead windows, note the partners. With plans to open about three stores each year, Osborn and Lee say they’ll incorporate the call-ahead windows in all future locations.
