50 Great Ideas

The buck strolls here

How far can a dollar stretch these days? Up and down seven blocks of Baltimore Avenue in the University City neighborhood of Philadelphia during Dollar Strolls, three to four warm-weather evenings designated annually. About 15 participating restaurants and merchants offer beer, ice cream, espresso, veggie pakoras, vegan cupcakes and more for $1 each to bargain-hunting eaters.

“This corridor is a mix of residential and commercial properties,” says Lori Klein Brennan, director of marketing and communications, University City District. “Business owners have come together and do these evenings to build community, promote the business corridor and hope to generate additional business in the future—goals they are meeting.”

Each Stroll has attracted over a thousand patrons who don’t mind waiting in line to sample the familiar at shops such as Milk & Honey Market, which specializes in local cheese, produce and their own urban honey, and far-away cuisines at Desi Chaat House and Vientiane Café.
