Bending the bento
The bento box: It’s not just for Japanese restaurants. This traditional lacquered, compartmentalized lunch box also makes a beautiful presentation for samplers of all kinds, as Think Tank has discovered.
The “globally influenced bistroteque” in Cambridge, Massachusetts, opened in 2010 as a music venue that would also serve serious cocktails and food with an Asian slant. The robust selection of small plates includes such selections as steamed edamame with ginger-soy dipping sauce, wings with sriracha or Asian barbecue sauce and sticky hoisin-glazed wings. The real draw, however, are the samplers, served in Japanese bento boxes and priced around $20. On any given night, they could include the likes of calamari, Peking egg rolls, yakitori-style chicken kabobs, salt and pepper shrimp and other fusion-style nibbles.
