Ask the staff chaplain

The mission at K&N Management, the Austin, Texas-based area developer for Rudy’s Country Store & BBQ and franchisor of Mighty Fine Burgers, is “to become world famous by delighting one guest at a time.” While the company’s 500 team members are committed to that mission, it’s difficult to be delightful if you come to work saddled with personal problems.

“We used to offer an Employee Assistance Program with an 800 number, but it was rarely used. We needed a service that would really connect with team members,” says HR director Allyson Young. After trying out Marketplace Ministries, a company that sends chaplains to the workplace, K&N decided they wanted someone on staff, available 24/7. Dr. Jack Allen, a non-denominational chaplain (pictured on a mission in Kenya), was hired in 2010.

Dr. Allen visits each of K&N’s eight restaurant locations once a week, so team members can conveniently make appointments with him for confidential talks. He’s also available by phone and will meet employees outside the workplace. “About 70 percent of his time is spent helping people deal with personal problems—family relationships, debt resolution, time management issues and the like,” notes Young. “Our team sees him as a go-to person for any and all problems.” The payoff—employees are better able to focus on their jobs—and the restaurant’s guests.
